Goldfields Ghana, former sponsors of the Ghana Black Stars have been announced as the headline sponsor for the maiden edition of the Western Region Invitational Tournament (WRIT), now rechristened as Goldfields WRIT 2019 at the Investment Center at the Regional Coordinating Council.
The tournament is to take place between 21st to 29th september, 2019 and include 8 top clubs in the country- Medeama SC, Elmina Sharks FC, Karela FC, Hasaacas FC, 11 Wise FC, Skyy FC, Proud United FC and Samartex FC in two groups of four. Group A will be based at Sekondi Stadium and Gyandu park while group B will be playing at Samartex Park in Sameraboi.
Speaking at the event, Francis Eduku, Vice President and head of Human Resource, West Africa for Goldfields says they took the decision to sponsor the tournament as part of their desire to see football grow and develop in the region. Her said his outfit has a good history with football because it is when they sponsored the Black Stars that the team qualified to the world cup for the first time in 2006. Mr Eduku said Goldfields is looking forward to supporting this tournament in the long term.
Chairman for the Western Region Sports Committee, Honourable Wilson Arthur showed gratitude to Goldfields and promised the money will be put to good use. He said his committee will put in hard work to make the tournament a success.
The Deputy Regional Minister, Eugenia Gifty, Guest for the occasion thanked Goldfields for the kind gesture and called on other corporate entities to also come on board to support the development of sports in the region and the nation at large.
