Goldfields, mining giants in West Africa have taken up the mantle to sponsor the maiden edition of the Western Region Invitational Tournament organized by the Western Region Sports Committee.
The well publicized tournament is envisaged to be an annual preseason tournament to help prepare clubs in the region to prepare very well for the upcoming season and to give the football public an experiential feeling in football event organization.
Goldfields’ Vice President and Head of Human Resource, West Africa, Mr Francis Eduku said the purpose of his outfit in partnering the organizers was not to necessarily get something in return as a company but to help unearth and develop players in the region for bigger things in the global football industry.
Wilson Arthur, Chairman for the Western Region Sports Committee, at the unveiling ceremony said whatever Goldfields touched becomes gold so he is looking forward to this omen of goldfields continuing. He said goldfields sponsored the black stars and for the first time, the senior national team qualified for the World Cup. He said football lovers in the region are in for a very memorable event.
