Nana Addo was telling blatant lies to Ghanaians when he said the GHS20, 000,000.00 budgeted for the celebrations of Ghana @60 anniversary was not going to be charged on the public purse, a Member of Parliament for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem constituency has said. In a press conference which the president inaugurated the 30 member committee to superintend the anniversary celebrations at the Flagstaff house, the president assured Ghanaians that public funds were not going to be used for the celebrations, and that the committee was going to solicit for funding from corporate Ghana. But it has emerged that that wasn’t the case.
The Hon. Member made this comment following a one –on-one interview with criticalnewsghana. According to Mr. Mills, government clandestinely charged some public agencies to donate towards the celebrations. “As we speak the lies told by the president that the state is not going to spend on the anniversary celebrations has come to the fore. Some state agencies were charged to raise funds for the anniversary celebrations” lamented the MP. “……… We are also aware that government has written to all districts, municipal and metropolitan Assemblies to use GHS10, 000.00 on the anniversary celebrations, and it will be deducted from their ‘common fund’. All in all, the MMDs alone are supposed to contribute about GHS2, 160,000.00 to the celebrations. We are yet to know the other state agencies and how much there were forced to contribute” the lawmaker asserted.
Ghana turned sixty (60) this year and government decided to have special anniversary celebrations. When the public raised eyebrow over the importance of the celebrations and particularly, the number of the people on the planning committee, especially, when the new government has said the nation’s economy is in shambles, the president assured the public of ensuring value for money, and also asked Ghanaians not to worry because the committee was expected to raise funds from the private sector for the celebrations.
Hon. Atta Mills, however, has contradicted the president’s promise with the alleged letter instructing MMDs to spend GHS10, 000.00 of their common fund on it. The legislator therefore, asked Ghanaians to be very vigilant and not fall for the deception of the Nana Addo led government.
